How many mixes two random records are apart
The floor is arithmetic on the tempo gap and the distance round the Camelot wheel — no catalog required, which is why it can be stated before any search runs. Share of 299,937 random ordered pairs, by how many mixes they need.

At the default 6 BPM a mix, only 10.2% of pairs can be played straight into each other and 94.9% are inside 6 mixes. Widen to nine BPM — a genuine pitch ride rather than a beatmatch — and that last figure goes to 99.8%.
Method: 5,929 public tracks carrying a key and a tempo, sampled at even strides across the catalog, song-form records excluded. 299,937 random ordered pairs from a seeded generator, so the figures reproduce. Chemistry is the same six-dimension score the rest of the site prints. Measured 2026-08-11.
How it finds a route
The plan is drawn before the records are picked
Searching a catalog this size record by record would mean every track crossed with every other. So the route is sketched in key-and-tempo space first, where the whole problem fits in twenty-four keys by a hundred and sixty tempos, and only the positions that hold something get looked up.
The floor comes first
Before anything is searched, the two records are measured against each other. A 17 BPM climb at six BPM a mix is three mixes minimum, whatever we hold — so the tool can tell you the shortest route that could exist before it goes looking for one, and tell you whether the tempo or the key is setting it.
The route is drawn on the wheel
Every hop moves one step round the Camelot wheel, flips major to minor, holds the key, or takes the two-step energy move. The search walks that 24-key graph for every key sequence of the right length, then ranks them on what the catalog actually holds at each tempo — so a route is rejected for being empty before a query is written, not after one comes back with nothing.
Records fill it last
Only positions with real stock get looked up, and each returns the most-played records in that key at that tempo. A maximin search then picks the sequence whose worst mix is best, because a route is worth what its weakest join is worth — three nineties and a forty-four is a trainwreck in good company, and its average says otherwise.

Common questions
What is a harmonic path?+
A sequence of records that gets you from one track to another when the two will not go together directly. Each step is a mix you could actually play: the key moves by one position on the Camelot wheel or flips between major and minor, and the tempo moves by no more than the amount you said you are willing to ride. The path finder searches 440,000+ analysed tracks for the sequence whose worst single mix is the best available.
Why does it say I need three mixes when the two tracks are only 17 BPM apart?+
Because 17 BPM is not one mix. At six BPM a move — about five per cent on the pitch fader at club tempos — you cover six, then twelve, then eighteen. The tool works that floor out before it searches anything, from the tempo gap and the distance round the Camelot wheel, and shows which of the two is setting it. If the key is the binding constraint it says so instead.
Can I make it use fewer records?+
Widen the tempo move. Four, six and nine BPM a mix are offered and the difference is large: at four BPM a mix the median pair of records in our catalog needs 4 mixes, at nine it needs 3. Nine BPM is a real pitch ride rather than a beatmatch, so the chemistry on those hops will be lower — the tool shows both numbers and lets you decide which trade you want.
Why is one of the suggested records not something I would play?+
The engine reads chemistry, not culture. It can tell you two records sit in compatible keys at compatible tempos with compatible energy; it cannot always tell you one of them is a chart pop record. Song-form records — rock, country, hip-hop, pop and the rest — are held out of the bridge slots automatically whenever neither of your two is one, but a crossover filed under an electronic genre will occasionally get through. Every bridge slot carries alternatives, and swapping one re-scores both affected mixes in place.
Are the scores the same as the rest of the site?+
Yes. Every hop is scored with the same six-dimension chemistry the Flow Builder, Live Mode and Score My Transition use, so a hop reading 82 here reads 82 if you check that pair on its own. The route ordering additionally accounts for genre distance, which the bare chemistry score does not — that only changes which route wins, never the number printed on it.
What happens if there is no route?+
Then it says so, and says why. Past 6 mixes this stops being a transition and starts being the set, so the search caps there. When two records cannot be bridged inside that many, the tool shows what each tempo step would cost instead — often nine BPM a mix turns a seven-mix journey into five.
Does it work for my own records?+
The route is built from tracks in the Mixgraph catalog, so both ends and everything between are records we have analysed. If a track you own is not in the catalog yet you can request it. To work over your whole collection instead, import it in the app — the Flow Builder scores imported tracks alongside catalog ones.
