Why it matters

A single number is only useful if it is hard to earn. A scale where everything reads 90 tells you nothing, which is why the scoring is calibrated so that a high score is genuinely uncommon rather than generous.

It is a rating of a specific direction, too. Track A into track B is not always the same move as B into A — energy and key both have a direction of travel.

How is chemistry calculated?+

Six dimensions — harmonic key, tempo, energy, groove, mood and vocal compatibility — combined with fixed weights, adjusted for how closely the two genres relate, then rescaled so the printed number reads like a grade.

Why does the same pair sometimes appear in a different order?+

Because the printed score and the ordering are not the same quantity. The number shown is the pure pair score and is stable; the running order also accounts for context like popularity and where you are in a set.
