Transition
A transition is the move from one track to the next — the overlap where both are playing and the point where the first is gone. It is the unit a set is actually built from, rather than the tracks themselves.

We hold 96,963 measured pairings across 12,354 artists and 5,622 community-rated transitions, on top of 7,243 sequenced by hand here.
Three different kinds of evidence about the same thing: what the scoring says should work, what DJs told us happened when they tried it, and what they actually chose to play next when nobody was asking. Where the three agree, the recommendation is worth trusting.

Measured on 11 August 2026 across published artist pairings and community transition ratings in the live database, alongside 7,243 adjacent transitions in flows sequenced by hand on Mixgraph (saved flows only, machine-generated running orders excluded, both tracks analysed). Method: the full transition dataset and its chance baseline.
Why it matters
Nobody remembers a set as a list of records. They remember the moments where one became another, which means the thing being judged is the join and not the parts — a set of excellent tracks in the wrong order is a worse set than ordinary tracks in the right one.
It is also the only part of DJing that can be measured from the outside. A track has properties; a transition has a relationship, and a relationship is what a recommendation has to get right.

What makes a good transition?+
Agreement on tempo and phrase first, then key, then everything else. The dimensions that break a mix outright are rhythmic; the ones that make it memorable are harmonic and about mood.
How long should a DJ transition be?+
As long as both records leave room for. A sparse outro against a drum-led intro will hold for thirty-two bars; two busy arrangements want a short blend or a cut.
How is a transition scored?+
Across six dimensions — harmonic, rhythmic, energy, groove, mood and vocal — combined into one chemistry figure. A score of 93 is the ceiling, and only 0.09% of random cross-artist pairs reach 85 or above.

Harmonic mixing means choosing the next track by key as well as tempo — staying on the same Camelot code, moving one step around the wheel, or swapping between the major and minor of the same number.
Blend
A blend is a transition where both records play together for a stretch — long enough that the overlap is part of the music rather than a join between two pieces of it.
