Texture

Texture is the tone of a track rather than its rhythm — how bright, how warm, how bass-heavy, how percussive. Two tracks can agree on key and tempo and still clash on texture.

Measured in our catalog

The median track reads 88 for bass weight, 59 for brightness, 44 for percussive ratio and 37 for warmth across 443,242 analysed tracks.

Bass weight sits far higher than the other three and barely varies, which is exactly what a catalog of club music should look like — the low end is a constant, and the differences between records live in the top half of the spectrum.

Why it matters

Texture is what a DJ is fixing when they reach for the EQ. Two bass-heavy records stacked on top of each other turn to mud in the low end; two bright ones fight in the highs. The mix is a texture problem long before it is a harmony problem.

It is also the dimension that separates records inside a genre. Tech house at 126 in 8A is a large room; how bright and how warm it is tells you which corner of that room you are standing in.

In Mixgraph

Texture applies a modifier on top of the six scored dimensions, so two otherwise identical candidates separate on tone.

Frequently asked

What is texture in a mix?+

The tonal character of a track — its balance of bass, midrange and top end, and how much of it is percussion versus sustained sound. It is what EQ is for.

Why do two tracks in the same key still sound bad together?+

Usually texture. If both records are carrying weight in the same part of the spectrum, they mask each other regardless of how well the keys agree.

How is texture different from energy?+

Energy is how hard a record hits; texture is what it is made of. A bright, thin record and a dark, heavy one can read identically on energy and be completely different to mix.
