What makes a good mashup
Vocal over instrumental. The most reliable recipe — a vocal-led track riding a clean instrumental bed gives both tracks room to breathe.
Harmonic compatibility. Same Camelot key is safest. Adjacent keys work. Parallel major/minor creates tension that can sound intentional.
Tempo relationship. Same BPM is easy. Half-time and double-time unlock genre-crossing pairs — 85 BPM hip-hop locks with 170 BPM drum & bass.
Texture contrast. A bright vocal over a dark bed cuts through. A warm instrumental under a cool vocal feels cohesive.
