Loudness war
The loudness war is the decades-long trend of mastering records progressively louder so they stand out against whatever plays before them. It is measurable across eras and it cost dynamic range to achieve.
In practice
Records from different decades were mastered to different targets. That gap is why gain-matching is not optional.
Expect the widest gaps in a set that spans eras, and set gain per record rather than per session — an older track dropped in at the level you were running for a modern one will simply disappear. The trend reversing means the newest records are not automatically the loudest any more either, so the assumption "new equals hot" is no longer safe. The one reliable method remains the same: meter each record as it loads.

Why it matters
For a DJ it is not history but a live problem: a set mixing records from different decades is mixing masters made to different targets, and the gap is large enough that gain-matching stops being optional and becomes the main thing standing between you and a set that lurches.
It has also largely ended, and for an unromantic reason — streaming platforms normalise playback, so a louder master no longer plays louder. The incentive that drove it is gone, which is why recent releases have started to recover some range.
