Gain normalisation
Gain normalisation sets every track to the same measured loudness automatically, so a quiet record and a loud one arrive at the channel matched. It corrects for mastering, not for how hard a record hits.

Nearly half the transitions DJs build here need under a decibel of gain correction — one in ten needs three decibels or more, and the widest in the corpus is 12.36.
Across 7,250 transitions sequenced by hand, the median level difference between the two records is 1.07 dB and 3,427 of them — 47.3% — sit inside a single decibel. That is the case for doing it by ear. The case for the feature is the tail: 719 transitions are three decibels or further apart and 77 are past six, which is a gap you hear before you have finished reaching for the knob. A normaliser is a tail instrument.

Measured on 11 August 2026 across 7,250 adjacent transitions in flows sequenced by hand on Mixgraph across 717 flows and 515 DJs (machine-generated running orders excluded, both tracks carrying an analysed level). Method: the full transition dataset and its chance baseline.
Why it matters
It removes the single most common way a transition announces itself. Two records at the same intensity, mastered several decibels apart, produce a jump in volume that no crossfader move disguises — and that jump has nothing to do with the music.
What it cannot do is make an energy decision for you. Normalisation flattens the level and leaves everything else alone, so a track that was always going to sound thin still sounds thin — it just sounds thin at the right volume.

Should DJs use auto gain?+
It depends what you are protecting against. Half of real transitions need under 1.07 dB of correction, so it changes little most of the time — its value is the 719 in 7,250 where the gap is three decibels or more.
Does normalisation change the sound of a track?+
No. It changes the level and nothing else. A normaliser measures loudness and applies a fixed offset, so the dynamics, the EQ balance and the master are all untouched.
Is normalisation the same as compression?+
No. Compression changes the relationship between loud and quiet parts inside a track. Normalisation moves the whole track up or down by one amount and leaves that relationship alone.
