Dynamic range
Dynamic range is the distance between a track’s quietest and loudest moments. A wide range means the drop hits because the build was restrained; a narrow one means everything arrives at the same level.
In practice
Range is what a limiter needs to work with. A pre-flattened record gives the rig nothing to do and sounds smaller.
You cannot restore range, so the useful move is to stop destroying it: no compression on the master, gains matched so nothing is being pushed, and a mix that leaves the venue’s processor some headroom. Where two records differ wildly in range, expect the dynamic one to feel quieter on the meters and bigger in the room, and gain-match by ear rather than by eye. Crest factor is the same idea expressed as a number: the distance between peak and average.

Why it matters
It is the thing loudness costs you, and the exchange is exact: a record cannot get louder overall without either clipping or giving up range, so every decibel of apparent loudness on a modern master was paid for with dynamics somewhere.
On a club system that trade goes badly, because the system is limiting anyway. A record with range arrives with its transients intact and the limiter has something to work with; a record with none arrives pre-flattened, and the rig cannot restore what the mastering removed.

Can dynamic range be restored?+
No. Once mastering has removed it, expanding afterwards produces artefacts rather than the original transients. It is a one-way trade.
What is crest factor?+
The distance between a track’s peak level and its average — the same idea as dynamic range expressed as a single number.
Does dynamic range matter on a club system?+
A great deal. The system limits regardless, and a record that arrives with transients intact gives it something to work with. A pre-flattened one just sounds smaller.

Headroom is the gap between where your signal is sitting and the point where it distorts. It is the room left for the loud parts, and for whatever you do to the channel next.
Peak and VU meters
A peak meter shows the highest instantaneous level, catching transients a fraction of a millisecond long. A VU meter averages over roughly 300 milliseconds, so it shows something much closer to perceived loudness.
Limiter
A limiter is a compressor with an absolute ceiling: it lets everything through until a set level, then refuses to exceed it. Mastering engineers use one on every record you own.
