Headroom

Headroom is the gap between where your signal is sitting and the point where it distorts. It is the room left for the loud parts, and for whatever you do to the channel next.

In practice

Leave headroom for the moment two records are both playing — that is when a mix demands the most and has the least.

The practical version is to set channels so a single deck peaks below the red, then check the master while both are open. Cutting rather than boosting on the EQ is the cheapest headroom there is: taking the low out of one record leaves the same balance as boosting the other and costs nothing. If the booth is too quiet, the answer is the booth knob or the amp, never pushing channels harder.

Why it matters

Every DJ move eats headroom. An EQ boost, two records overlapping, a drop landing while both channels are open — all of it adds level, and if you started with the meters already near the top there is nowhere for it to go but into distortion.

It is also cumulative in a way that is easy to miss. Channels sum into the master, so two perfectly-set decks can produce a master that clips the moment they overlap, which is why the master meter deserves as much attention as the channel ones.

How much headroom should a DJ leave?+

Enough that two decks open at once do not push the master into the red. A few decibels below the top on each channel is usually right, because two equal signals summing adds about 3 dB.

Does cutting EQ give you headroom?+

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to get it. Cutting the band you do not need achieves the same balance as boosting the one you do, without adding any level.

What happens when you run out of headroom?+

The signal clips — the peaks are squared off and the sound becomes harsh and flat. It is not a gentle limit; it arrives suddenly and is audible immediately on a big system.
