Phrase and bar counter.
Drop a track and it counts it: the first downbeat, every 8, 16 or 32-bar phrase, and the intro, breakdown and drop measured in phrases rather than in seconds. It plays the record back with the count running, so you can check it by ear instead of trusting it.

The measurement
Why the eight is real.
Everybody says dance music is built in eights. This is how much it actually is.
Take 555 club records, find the tempo of each one, and read off where the low end leaves and comes back — the breakdowns, the drops, the builds. Snap every boundary to the nearest bar and you get 768 sections whose lengths are whole numbers. Then ask how far each of those numbers is from a multiple of eight, and compare it against the same number of boundaries scattered at random over the same records at the same tempos.
60.9% of real sections land within a bar of a whole number of phrases, against 39.5% at random. And the other end is the better half of the evidence: only 6.5% land four bars off — the furthest a section can possibly sit from a phrase line — against 13.9% at random. Real structure clusters on the phrase and avoids the point opposite it, which is what an effect looks like rather than a coincidence.
The first version of this measurement asked whether section lengths were exactly multiples of eight, and the answer was a much weaker 23.7% against 13.3%. The data explained why: the four commonest section lengths in the whole sample are 7, 8, 15, 16 bars, which is one distribution peaked on the phrase rather than two. The spread is the instrument's, not the music's — the detector smooths the low end over a bar before reading it, so it cannot place a boundary tighter than that. A bar of tolerance is its resolution, and the control gets exactly the same allowance.

555 records, 768 interior sections, measured 2026-08-12 with the same on-device analyser this page runs. First and last sections are excluded because they are clipped by where the audio starts and stops, which would say something about the file rather than about the record. The control is a seeded generator subject to the same four-bar minimum length the detector enforces, so it is reproducible and the only difference between the two columns is whether the boundaries came from the music.
Sixteen-bar structure shows the same shape and thirty-two does not: 28.0% against 16.3% at sixteen, and 8.3% against 3.9% at thirty-two — where the sample is a two-minute excerpt, so a 32-bar section is most of it and there are few to count.
The skill
Counting a record without a screen
You can do this in your head, and the point of the tool is to get you there faster.
Start on the first kick and count in fours, saying the bar number on the one: one two three four, two two three four, up to eight. That is a phrase. Most of what happens in a club record happens on the one of a phrase, so once the count is running you stop being surprised by the music.
The tell that you have it right is that you can predict. Say “the hats come in on the next one” before they do, three times in a row, and you are counting rather than following. The tell that you have it wrong is that a change lands on your three or your seven, which means you started a bar or two late — not that the record is odd.
Four-bar phrases exist and matter in older house and in a lot of drum and bass, and thirty-two is the unit an intro or an outro is usually built from. Switching the phrase length here and watching which one the record's changes actually agree with is the fastest way to hear the difference.
When it is wrong
The four ways the count breaks.
A counter that is confidently wrong is worse than no counter, so here is exactly how it fails.

The number worth knowing before you trust any of this: 10.2% of the grids this detector actually draws are more than two BPM out, in either octave, measured on 300 records against Beatport's own release metadata. It is within ±2 BPM on 84.3% and within an octave on 88.7%. That is good enough to be useful and nowhere near good enough to be taken on faith, which is why every correction is one press away instead of behind a settings panel.
There is a second check that costs nothing and is better than the detector's own confidence: a club record changes section on a phrase line. If the sections it found do not land on your phrases, the count is wrong even when the tool is sure. That ratio is printed under the controls for exactly that reason.
What it is not
No click, and no loop
The beat dots follow the playhead. They are a display, they are accurate to an animation frame, and that is all they claim. There is no click over the record and no seamless phrase loop here, because both need the beat placed to a fraction of a millisecond and this page only knows where the playhead is to the nearest frame. A click a few milliseconds early is not a slightly late click, it is a flam, and it would be the first thing anyone noticed. The DJ metronome is the other half of that: a click that is placed properly, counting the same bars and phrases, with no record under it.
What you get instead is “play this phrase” on every row, which starts exactly on the boundary because a buffer start offset is sample-accurate. If you want to check whether bar 33 is really bar 33, that is the honest way to do it.

Common questions
How do I count bars in a song?+
Find the first strong downbeat — in a club record that is almost always the first kick — and count "one two three four, two two three four, three two three four" up to eight. That is one phrase. Keep going and you will feel the record change on the count of one rather than randomly, because it was written that way. This page does the same count off the audio and shows it moving, which is faster than learning it in the dark.
What is phrasing in DJing?+
Phrasing is bringing the next record in so its phrase lines up with the one already playing. Get it right and the two tracks change together and it sounds intentional; get it a few bars out and every build, drop and vocal in one record lands in the wrong place in the other, which is the thing people mean when they say a mix "felt off" but cannot say why. It has nothing to do with key and only a little to do with beatmatching.
How long is a 32-bar phrase?+
Sixty seconds at 128 BPM, 44 at 174, 68 at 113. One bar is four beats, so 32 bars is 128 beats, and 128 beats at 128 beats per minute is exactly a minute — which is why 128 BPM feels so tidy to plan sets at. How do I find the first downbeat?+
The tool guesses it from where the low-end energy lands, which is right on a four-to-the-floor record and a coin toss on anything with a broken kick pattern. When it is wrong there are two fixes and they are different: if the count is a beat or two out, nudge it; if it has locked onto something else entirely, play the track, stop on the one, and press "bar 1 is here".
Do all dance tracks use 8-bar phrases?+
Most of them, and it is measurable rather than folklore. Across 555 records, 60.9% of the 768 sections this tool detects are within a bar of a whole number of 8-bar phrases — against 39.5% for the same boundaries scattered at random over the same tracks. The tolerance is not a fudge: the section detector smooths the low end over a bar before reading it, so it genuinely cannot place a boundary tighter than that, and the control gets exactly the same allowance. What "not all" looks like in practice is a breakdown that runs 12 bars or a build that runs 20, and those are the places a mix planned on the assumption of eights falls apart.
Why does the count drift later in the track?+
Because the grid is one constant tempo and the record is not. Anything played by hand, anything recorded off vinyl, and a lot of older house has a tempo that wanders by a fraction of a BPM, and a fraction of a BPM is a beat out over a few minutes. Set bar one nearer the part you care about and the count will be right there instead of at the top.
Does this upload my music?+
No. The file is decoded and analysed in this browser tab — this page makes no network request with your audio in it, and there is no upload endpoint behind it. That is also why it works with the tab offline once the page has loaded.
Is there a click or a metronome?+
Not over your record, and on purpose. The counter on this page follows the playhead, which is accurate to a frame — completely fine for a display, and nowhere near good enough to put a click on, because a click five milliseconds early is a flam rather than a beat. If you want something to count against, the DJ metronome is a separate tool built on a clock that keeps its beats to a fraction of a millisecond over an hour, with the bar and phrase count on it.
