Triplet
A triplet divides a beat into three instead of two. It is the rhythm behind shuffle, swing-heavy house and most trap hi-hat patterns, and it sits inside a normal 4/4 bar without changing the tempo.
In practice
Three notes where two would go. Identical BPM, and a straight record over a triplet one still fights.
Listen for it in the hats: a triplet pattern gallops where a straight one marches. When you find a pair that will not settle despite a perfect beatmatch, subdivision is the usual culprit and the fix is choosing a different record rather than working the jog. Where you do want to bridge between the two feels, do it across a breakdown, so the drums are absent at the moment the subdivision changes.

Why it matters
Triplets are what make a record feel like it is rolling rather than stepping, and they are the reason two tracks at identical BPM can refuse to sit together. The grids agree, the beats land in the same place, and everything between the beats disagrees — which is audible immediately and invisible on any analysis.
That makes them a mixing hazard worth recognising by ear rather than by number. A straight track over a triplet-heavy one produces a wobble that no amount of nudging fixes, because the problem is not alignment but subdivision.

Do triplets change the tempo?+
No. The bar is the same length and the beat count is the same; only the division between beats changes. That is exactly why two tracks can be perfectly beatmatched and still fight.
Is swing the same as triplets?+
Swing is usually a partial move toward a triplet feel rather than a full one, which is why it is often a percentage. Full triplets are the extreme end of the same axis.
How do I mix a triplet track into a straight one?+
Across a breakdown, where the drums are out of the way. Trying to blend the two drum patterns directly makes the subdivision clash audible for the whole transition.
