RMS
RMS is an average of level over a short window rather than an instant reading. It tracks how loud something actually sounds far better than a peak meter does, which is why VU-style metering is built on it.

Peaks show the sharpest moment; RMS shows the weight. Match records on weight, which usually means by ear.
Most club mixer meters are peak-reading, so use them to stay out of the red and match levels with your ears rather than your eyes. The tell that you have matched on peaks by mistake is a record that looked fine on the meter and arrives noticeably quieter — that is a dynamic track next to a squashed one. Where you do have an averaging meter or a LUFS reading, trust it over the peak display for this specific job.

Why it matters
It explains the most common gain-matching mistake there is. Two records can peak identically and sit several decibels apart in the room, because one is dynamic and one is squashed — and the peak meter on your mixer is showing you the transients rather than the loudness.
It is also why a quiet-looking old record can hit harder than a modern one that pins the meters. Peaks describe the sharpest moment; RMS describes the weight, and the floor responds to weight.

Why do two tracks at the same meter level sound different?+
The meter is showing peaks, not loudness. A dynamic record and a squashed one can peak identically while the squashed one is clearly louder in the room.
Is RMS the same as LUFS?+
No. LUFS weights frequencies the way the ear does; RMS is an unweighted average. The same track reads differently on each and the gap varies by track.
How should I gain-match in a booth?+
By ear, using the meters only to stay out of the red. Club mixer meters are peak-reading, which is the wrong instrument for the job.

Peak and VU meters
A peak meter shows the highest instantaneous level, catching transients a fraction of a millisecond long. A VU meter averages over roughly 300 milliseconds, so it shows something much closer to perceived loudness.
Gain
Gain sets how hot a track arrives at the channel before anything else touches it. Most club mixers label the same control trim. It is a correction for how a record was mastered, not a volume control for the room.
Dynamic range
Dynamic range is the distance between a track’s quietest and loudest moments. A wide range means the drop hits because the build was restrained; a narrow one means everything arrives at the same level.
