Danceability

Danceability is a 0–100 reading of how easy a track is to move to — steady tempo, strong beat, regular rhythm. It is not the same as energy: a slow, quiet record can be highly danceable.

Measured in our catalog

Danceability sits high and tight — a median of 73 across 443,242 analysed tracks, spanning only 27 to 96.

It tracks groove closely at 0.47, which is the relationship that makes sense of it: danceability is largely a statement about how legible the groove is, not about how loud the record is.

Why it matters

Danceability is the closest thing the analysis has to a floor test. It answers whether the rhythm is legible enough to move to, independently of how hard the record hits.

For a DJ the useful reading is a low-energy, high-danceability track — the record that keeps a room moving during the part of the night you are not trying to peak.

Frequently asked

What makes a track danceable?+

A steady tempo, a clear and regular beat, and a rhythm that states where the downbeat is. Complexity works against it; so does anything that makes the pulse ambiguous.

Is danceability the same as energy?+

No. Energy is how hard a track hits; danceability is how easy it is to move to. The most useful records for the early part of a night score high on the second and low on the first.

Why is almost everything in the catalog rated highly danceable?+

Because it is a catalog of dance music. The median is 73 and nothing reads below 27 — the figure is useful for comparing tracks within a genre, not for deciding whether something belongs in a club.
