Dancefloor
The dancefloor is the space people dance in, and as a DJ term it means the crowd rather than the room — "the floor is with you" describes a state of attention, not a set of tiles.
In practice
Half full needs permission, full needs direction. Most of what makes a floor work is not the music at all.
Read fullness before energy. A thin floor responds to grooves that are easy to join and empties further under anything demanding; a full one can take direction and wants it. Walk out at least once a night — the floor is a different acoustic and social space from the booth and you cannot read either from behind the decks. And when a room will not fill despite everything, check the things that are not yours: the temperature, the lights, whether the sound reaches the edges.

Why it matters
What makes one work is mostly not the music. Sightlines, temperature, how full it is relative to its size, where the bar is and whether the sound is even across it all decide whether people stay, and a DJ who does not know this attributes every empty room to their own selection.
The one thing you do control is the shape of what you play against how full the room is. A half-empty floor needs records that give people permission to dance rather than records that demand it, and the difference is one of the most useful things a DJ can learn to feel.
