Saturation

Saturation adds harmonics by pushing a signal into gentle distortion. It makes a sound feel louder and denser without the meter moving much, which is why almost every commercial master has some.

In practice

Saturation buys perceived loudness without level — which is exactly why it hides from the meter you gain-match on.

For a DJ this is mostly a listening skill rather than a control: notice when a record feels louder than it measures and trust your ears over the meter when you set the trim. Where it is a control — a drive knob, a tape-modelled effect — small amounts are the whole trick, because saturation is pleasant right up to the point where it becomes distortion and there is very little distance between the two.

Why it matters

Saturation is the reason two tracks at the same measured level can feel a long way apart. The added harmonics sit in the range the ear is most sensitive to, so a saturated record reads as bigger while a level meter says it is not — and gain-matching by meter alone will leave the pair sounding uneven anyway.

It is also what "analogue warmth" describes. The desks, tape machines and preamps people are nostalgic for all distorted slightly, and what survived into digital production is the deliberate reproduction of that distortion.
