Record weight

A record weight is a heavy disc placed over the spindle to press a record flat against the platter. It improves contact on warped records and adds mass to the platter, which resists small speed variations.

In practice

A weight fights the slipmat, so it belongs on a listening deck. The exception is a warped record you must play.

If a record is warped enough that the stylus lifts, a weight will usually rescue the play — but expect cueing to feel wrong for as long as it is on, because you have deliberately coupled the record to the platter. Take it off afterwards rather than leaving it. Note also that a heavy weight on a belt-drive deck loads the motor in a way it was not designed for; on a high-torque direct drive it is a non-issue.

Why it matters

It is a listening accessory more than a DJ one, and the reason is the slipmat. A DJ deck is set up so the record can move independently of the platter; a weight clamping the record to the platter works directly against that, which makes cueing and scratching worse rather than better.

Where it genuinely helps is a warped record you need to play front to back, and mastering or archival work where nothing is being touched. Knowing which situation you are in is the whole decision.

Should DJs use a record weight?+

Generally no. It couples the record to the platter, which is the opposite of what a slipmat exists to achieve, and it makes cueing and scratching feel wrong.

Does a record weight improve sound?+

On a warped or poorly pressed record it can, by improving contact with the platter. On a flat record in a DJ setup the difference is not what you would be giving up in feel.

Can a weight damage a turntable?+

On a belt drive it loads the motor beyond what it was designed for. On a high-torque direct-drive deck it is not a concern.
