RCA and XLR

RCA is the unbalanced two-channel connector on players, turntables and consumer gear. XLR is the balanced three-pin connector used for long runs and microphones, and it locks into place.

In practice

RCA pulls out when somebody catches it; XLR locks — which is why the long run uses XLR.

Match the connector to the job rather than to what is on the shelf. RCA for short unbalanced hops between players and the mixer, XLR for the master out to the system and for microphones. Check RCA plugs are fully seated when a channel sounds thin or drops one side — a half-inserted plug is the most common cause and looks completely normal. Where a mixer offers both master outputs, use the XLRs. And carry a spare pair of RCA cables: they are the connector most likely to fail and the one least likely to be spare in a booth.

Why it matters

The locking collar is not a detail. An RCA plug pulls out if somebody catches the cable, and in a booth that means one side of the mix disappearing mid-track; an XLR has to be released deliberately, which is why the run out to the amplifiers uses it.

They also differ in what they carry. RCA is one signal per plug and unbalanced; XLR is one balanced signal per connector, so a stereo XLR feed is two cables. That is why a mixer has a pair of RCA sockets for the booth and a pair of XLRs for the room.

Is XLR better than RCA?+

For long runs and microphones, yes — it is balanced and it locks. For the short hop from a player to a mixer, RCA is what the equipment offers and is perfectly adequate.

Why is RCA also called phono?+

Because it was the connector on record players. Confusingly, "phono" on a DJ mixer means the turntable input rather than the connector type — the same word for two different things.

Can you convert RCA to XLR?+

Physically yes, with an adapter, but the signal stays unbalanced and stays at the level it started at. A converter with active balancing is the version that actually helps.
