Pad

A pad is a sustained, slow-moving sound — usually a synth or strings — that fills the background and holds the harmony. This is the musical sense; the rubber squares on a controller are performance pads.

When a blend sounds crowded but the low end is already swapped and the drums sit fine, the pads are the culprit. Pull the mids on the outgoing channel rather than reaching for the filter, because a high-pass takes the hats and the top-line with it while a mid cut removes only the thing that is actually in the way. The same reasoning is why a percussive record and a pad-led one layer so easily: they are never in the same place at the same time.

Why it matters

Pads are what a breakdown is mostly made of, and they are the element that decides whether two records can be layered. Because a pad sustains, it occupies its frequency range continuously rather than in hits, so two pads at once collide in a way two drum patterns never do.

They are also the easiest thing to remove when a mix is fighting. A pad lives in the mids, so a mid cut on the outgoing record clears the space almost completely without touching the drums or the bassline — which is why the mid EQ is more useful in a long blend than most people give it credit for.
