Impedance

Impedance, in ohms, is how much a pair of headphones resists the signal driving them. Higher impedance needs more voltage for the same loudness, which is why one pair can be loud on one output and thin on another.

In practice

Buy DJ headphones between 32 and 64 ohms. High-impedance studio pairs are quieter on exactly the outputs you need them loud on.

If you already own a 250-ohm studio pair, keep them for the studio and buy something low-impedance and closed-back for gigs — sensitivity matters as much as the ohm figure, and a pair rated around 100 dB per milliwatt at 32 ohms will be comfortably loud anywhere. Test on the quietest output you expect to meet rather than the loudest: the question is whether they are usable on a tired booth mixer, not whether they can hurt you on a fresh one.

Why it matters

It is the specification that decides whether the headphones you bought for home will work in a booth you have never seen. DJ headphones sit deliberately low — usually between 32 and 64 ohms — so that a phone, a controller and a club mixer all drive them adequately. Studio pairs at 250 or 600 ohms are a different tool and will disappoint you at a gig.

Low impedance is not automatically better. It draws more current, which on a weak output can distort before it gets loud, and it makes any hiss in the amplifier more audible. The reason DJ pairs land where they do is that it is the compromise that survives being plugged into anything.
