DVS vs timecode vinyl

DVS is the whole system — software, an interface and control records — that lets a turntable play digital files. Timecode vinyl is one component of it: the record carrying the tone the software reads.

In practice

DVS is the system, timecode vinyl is the record inside it. Buy the records last, after the licence and the interface.

Check three things in order: whether your software licence includes vinyl control, whether your interface has enough phono inputs for the decks you own, and only then which control records to buy. When one side drops out mid-set, check the needle before anything else — worn styli and dusty control records account for most single-deck failures, and both are cheap to carry a spare of.

Why it matters

People use the two words interchangeably and it usually does not matter, until you are buying. Timecode vinyl on its own does nothing; it needs software licensed for control and an interface with enough inputs. Buying the records without checking the licence is a common and expensive mistake.

The distinction also matters when something breaks. If one deck loses control, the fault is in that deck’s chain — the record, the needle, the input — and not in the system. If both do, it is the interface, the software or the calibration, and swapping records will not help.

Can I use timecode vinyl without DVS software?+

No. The record only carries a control tone; without software licensed to decode it and an interface to get it in, it produces nothing but a tone.

Why does one deck lose control mid-set?+

Almost always that deck’s own chain — a worn stylus, a dusty record or a loose phono connection. If both decks go at once, look at the interface or the calibration instead.

Do I need special turntables for DVS?+

No. Any turntable with a decent cartridge and stable pitch will do it; the software is reading an ordinary record through an ordinary phono input.
