DJ booth

The DJ booth is the space the equipment sits in: the table, the monitor, the power, and where all of it sits relative to the floor. It is part of the instrument, because it decides what you can hear.

In practice

Arrive early enough to hear the booth before you have to play in it. Most booth problems take five minutes to fix.

Stand where you will be standing and listen for three things: whether the monitor reaches you without shouting, whether the table moves when the kick lands, and whether the low end you hear matches what the floor gets. A towel or a bit of foam under a resonant table solves more skipping than any cartridge change. If the monitor is wrong, ask — a sound engineer would much rather move a wedge at nine than be blamed for your set at one.

Why it matters

A booth is good or bad in ways that show up in the mix. A table that resonates puts the sub into the platters and makes needles skip; a monitor pointed at the back of your head means you are mixing on the room’s reflections; a booth behind the speaker stacks means you hear the bass a beat late and drift without knowing why.

None of that is your fault and most of it is fixable in five minutes if you arrive early enough to notice. That is the real argument for turning up before your set rather than during it — not politeness, but the chance to find out what you are actually going to be listening to.

Frequently asked

Why do the decks skip in some booths?+

Low-frequency energy from the system is reaching the platters through the table. Isolation under the decks or under the table legs fixes it far more reliably than raising the tracking force.

Why does the mix sound different on the floor?+

Because the booth is a different acoustic space, often behind or beside the speakers. Walk out and listen once during your set — it is the only way to know what you are actually giving people.

Can I ask the engineer to change the booth?+

Yes, and early. Moving a monitor or adding isolation is a two-minute job before doors and an impossible one at peak time.
