Direct drive
On a direct-drive turntable the motor turns the platter itself; on a belt drive an offset motor turns it through an elastic belt. The belt isolates motor vibration and, in doing so, removes the instant response DJs need.
In practice
Direct drive for anything you touch, belt drive for anything you only listen to. The belt is what removes the response.
If a deck is going to be cued, held, backspun or scratched, direct drive is not a preference, it is a requirement — a belt cannot deliver a release that lands at pitch on the first beat. If you also own a listening deck, a belt is perfectly reasonable there. When buying used, check that the platter reaches speed and holds it under a hand, because a tired direct-drive motor and a stretched belt fail in similar ways from the outside.

Why it matters
The trade is genuinely a trade rather than a marketing story. A belt damps motor noise, which is why the design persists in listening decks; it also stretches, so the platter takes time to reach speed and does not snap back when released. That single property is what rules it out for DJ use.
Direct drive gives you instant start, immediate recovery and a platter you can hold — plus, usually, a stronger and more repairable motor. The vibration argument that favoured belts has largely been engineered away in the decks DJs actually buy.

Can you DJ on a belt-drive turntable?+
Poorly. The belt stretches, so the platter is slow to reach speed and does not recover when released, which is exactly the behaviour cueing depends on.
Does belt drive sound better?+
The historical argument was that a belt isolates motor vibration, and it does. On modern DJ decks that vibration has been engineered down to the point where it is not the deciding factor.
What should I check on a used direct-drive deck?+
That it reaches speed almost immediately, holds pitch under a hand, and that the pitch fader has no dead spot. Those three cover most of what actually fails.

Torque
Torque is the rotational force a turntable’s motor applies to the platter, usually quoted as start-up torque in kilogram-centimetres. High torque means the platter reaches speed almost instantly and resists being slowed.
Turntable
A turntable spins a record at a constant speed while a stylus tracks its groove. A DJ turntable adds a pitch fader, high torque so it reaches speed instantly, and a platter you can hold and release.
Tonearm
The tonearm carries the cartridge across the record, holding the stylus in the groove at a controlled angle and force. Its counterweight sets that force and its anti-skate opposes the pull toward the centre.
Brake
A brake is a controlled slowdown to a stop, either by killing the turntable motor or with the brake control on a player. The pitch falls with the tempo, which is the whole effect.
