Controller
A controller is a jog-wheel-and-mixer surface that drives DJ software on a computer. It sends control messages rather than making playback decisions, and usually carries the soundcard that turns the software’s output back into sound.
In practice
The laptop is the instrument and the controller is the surface, so protect the laptop first.
Turn off sleep, automatic updates and every notification before you play, and plug into mains rather than trusting a battery through a two-hour set. Keep a wired connection to the controller — a hub in the chain is one more thing to fail — and check whether your unit is class-compliant or needs a vendor driver, because the answer decides whether an operating-system update can take you offline. If you play out, learn what your software does when the controller is unplugged mid-track: on most, the audio keeps running and only the controls stop, which is the difference between a recoverable moment and silence.

Why it matters
It is the cheapest complete rig and the one with the most moving parts. The tracks, the timing, the effects and the recording all live in software, so the controller is an interface to a machine that is doing the work.
That dependency is the thing to plan around. A laptop that sleeps, updates or runs out of disk takes the music with it, which is a class of failure a standalone player simply does not have.

Do you need a laptop for a DJ controller?+
Yes, unless the unit is explicitly standalone. A controller sends control messages to software; with nothing to send them to, the jog wheels and faders do nothing.
Is a controller worse than CDJs?+
It is different, not worse. The mixing is the same skill. What differs is the failure surface — a computer in the chain — and the layout, which usually does not match a club booth.
What happens if the controller unplugs mid-set?+
On most software the audio keeps playing and only the controls go dead, so reconnecting recovers the set. Test yours at home rather than discovering the answer in a booth.

MIDI is the control language a controller speaks. It carries note and control-change messages rather than audio, each with a value from 0 to 127, which is how a knob movement becomes a parameter change in software.
MIDI mapping
MIDI mapping assigns a physical control to a software function. Most software has a learn mode: arm mapping, move the knob, click the function, and that control drives it until you change it again.
Audio interface
An audio interface converts between the digital signal inside software and the analogue signal a mixer or amplifier accepts. In a timecode rig it also converts the other way, digitising the control signal coming off the turntables.
Standalone player
A standalone player reads music straight from a USB stick or SD card. The decoding, the display and the cueing all happen inside the player, so nothing about the performance depends on a computer being awake.
